This blog is in honor of Earth Day and “go green and get healthy”, an initiative in CDC ! I have been thinking how to materialize initiative and let the people could see it, feel it and learn from it to improve the environment and get healthy!
Chinese has a saying “A thousand mile journey starts with the first step”.Few examples around ourselves-individuals might help and enlighten each other to better the earth.
Few weeks ago, my wife and I decided that in order to save water for our garden and lawn, we need to change our traditional way to water garden and lawn from utility system. Not only the water cost is huge but also the county we live has very strict limitation on exploring the water for garden and lawn. We searched and researched. We finally decided that getting rain barrel installed is the best way to solve the issue. The benefits are obvious: save cost and improve environment (Yes, smart fashion: go green!).
Technology and products are already in market. Wal-mart and many retailers do have different rain barrels on sale! Our issue was how to get the largest barrel at minimum price. The barrel in the market is not cheap as we imagine. A 50/60 gallon barrel in retailer will cost about $100. Then we searched craigslist and found a guy selling used shampoo tank. It is large. It can hold 275 gallon water. It has a faucet at the bottom. Surely it is an ideal barrel! After bargain with the guy, we got it for $100. After installation, we were afraid that the rain from the roof would not be able to fill it once. In those days, whole family members expected, expected and expected raining days! Any slight piece of raining information would excite us! Finally, it rained! Every member frequently checked and checked how high the water reached and announced to other members! When the tank is full, excitement explores! That’s a really fun! It did not take long to fill the tank! In fact, it is just a matter of one if it rains heavy! The photos and video clip show the rain tank we proud installed!
